ALAMEDA, Calif. (KRON) -- Wednesday marks two years since the killing of Mario Gonzalez, the 26-year-old who died while being restrained by Alameda police back in 2021.Family and friends of Gonzalez gathered to celebrate his life on Oak Street, where he was killed. "You know just share space with people and get out spirits lifted, commemorate him and remember him. Do things that he liked to do, listen to music, and eat tacos,” said his brother, Jerry Gonzalez. Homicide suspect found when trying to reenter the U.S. from Mexico James Fisher, Cameron Leahy and Eric McKinley were the three police officers involved in his death. Gonzalez’s death was ruled a homicide, however, previous Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O'Malley said criminal charges on the three officers could not be justified. Just this year, new District Attorney Pamela Price announced she is reopening the case. GLENDALE, Ariz. After Matt Miazga’s giveaway to Atuna led to Rodríguez’s shot off the crossbar, Miazga lofted the rebound from inside his penalty area to Sergiño Dest, who dribbled through the midfield and passed to Alan Soñora. Soñora sent the ball wide to Jordan Morris, who crossed toward a streaking Ferreira. Defender Luis Chávez tried to clear and the ball glanced off a foot to Ferreira, who directed the ball past onrushing goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo from 7 yards out for his eighth goal in 18 international appearances.Because the match was not on a FIFA international fixture date, just two Americans and three Mexicans started who had extensive playing t...

Low tech makes cleaner water in Iowa; so what’s stopping it?

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:36:32 GMT

SLATER, Iowa (AP) — Nick Helland’s central Iowa farm looks much like every other nearby farm on this chilly March day, with corn stubble stretching from a gravel road up over a low hill to the northern horizon. But look closely, and you can see patches of muddy ground where a few months ago crews buried low-tech systems called bioreactors and streamside buffers that filter fertilizer-borne nitrates from water as it drains from Helland’s field into nearby Big Creek and eventually the Des Moines River. The underground devices work. The question is whether one Iowa county’s promising new approach to an old problem can be expanded enough to finally address nitrate pollution that, for years, has endangered drinking water, made more than half the state’s waterways unfit for fish or humans, and fueled a giant dead zone nearly 1,000 miles away in the Gulf of Mexico.Polk County is doing it by making it painless for farmers — handling all the logistics and arrangements for the syste...
