SF Giants’ small wins no match for dominant Braves

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:59:19 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO — Sean Manaea didn’t walk off the mound with a lead, but got a standing ovation from the home crowd. They’d seen how the left-handed featured pitcher managed to tame a Braves team that destroys left-handed pitchers. It wasn’t Manaea’s fault his outing wasn’t enough. The Braves barrel up the ball better than most in the league, so it’s worth celebrating Manaea holding them to just two hard hits and five strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. But the little wins haven’t been enough for the Giants lately, and certainly wasn’t enough in the Giants’ 7-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday afternoon. The Giants have lost 14 of their last 19 games.Manaea had some of his best stuff despite not throwing his changeup, getting plenty of weak contact and 13 swing-and-misses between his fastball and slider. But the Braves don’t need gifts to get a win; Austin Riley’s solo blast off Manaea untied a tied game in the fift...

WROCLAW, Poland (AP) — After a controversial win to retain his heavyweight boxing titles, Oleksandr Usyk is targeting a long-awaited and elusive unification fight with Tyson Fury.“I’m ready tomorrow,” the Ukrainian declared on Saturday when asked about Fury. This was after Usyk stopped British challenger Daniel Dubois in the ninth round. That win followed a disputed low blow which gave the Ukrainian champion time to recover.Fighting for the first time in more than a year and cheered on by fans waving Ukrainian flags, Usyk knocked down Dubois in the eighth round. Referee Luis Pabon stopped the fight when Usyk dumped him again in the ninth with a stiff right to the jaw.The fight was halted in the fifth round for what Pabon ruled was a low blow by Dubois which sent Usyk to the canvas. Replays showed the punch hitting around Usyk’s belt. It was not given as a knockdown but nor were any points deducted from Dubois, and Pabon urged Usyk: “Take your time.”The Ukrainian seemed to...

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. Now we’re undefeated. To all the people who doubted me, here we are now.”Lawrence grabbed the holeshot in the opening moto at Ironman and staved off a mid-race challenge by Chase Sexton before pulling away to win by 5.8 seconds. A flinch at the gate cost Lawrence the holeshot in the second moto, but he still managed to slide into second exiting the first turn. A crash by leader Dylan Ferrandis allowed Lawrence to move to the front and he again faced...
