Nearly nine out of 10 parents believe their child is performing at grade level despite standardized tests showing far fewer students are on track, according to a poll released Wednesday by Gallup and the nonprofit Learning Heroes.Report cards, which many parents rely on for a sense of their children's progress, might be missing the whole picture, researchers say. Without that knowledge, parents may not seek opportunities for extra support for their children.“Grades are the holy grail,” said Bibb Hubbard, founder and president of Learning Heroes. “They’re the number one indicator that parents turn to to understand that their child is on grade level, yet a grade does not equal grade-level mastery. But nobody’s told parents that.”In the Gallup survey, 88% of parents say their child is on grade level in reading, and 89% of parents believe their child is on grade level in math. AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A deadly crash shut down eastbound Highway 71 near the Austin airport early Wednesday morning. The crash happened around 6 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Hwy 71 near its intersection with Highway 183. All traffic headed east is being diverted onto Highway 183. As an alternate route, drivers could use Burleson Road to FM 973, to Hwy 71 to access the airport. According to the Austin Fire Department, one person died after a motorcycle crashed. The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport said on social media drivers should expect huge traffic delays getting to the airport and plan for extra time to arrive. This is a developing story. SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A Schenectady man was arrested on Tuesday, November 7, and is accused of trying to meet a 14-year-old for sexual exploitation. Joseph Leverett faces multiple charges. State Police investigators, along with the Troop G Computer Crimes Unit and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force arrested Leverett following an investigation. According to state police, the investigation found Leverett made arrangements and traveled to a pre-determined location in Colonie to meet what he believed to be a 14-year-old to sexually exploit them.Charges:Second-degree attempted rapeSecond-degree attempted criminal sex actSecond-degree attempted patronizing a person for prostitutionLeverett was arrested and processed at Latham State Police. ST. LOUIS - A brief police chase ends with a stolen car crashing head-on into a St. Louis City police unit, sending two officers to the hospital. Authorities told FOX 2 that, fortunately, those two officers have already been treated and released from the hospital, and they are expected to be okay. There were four people inside the stolen car. The police revealed that they are all in custody Wednesday morning.The stolen car winding up flipped over. The police unit has significant front-end damage. This was just after 9:30 p.m. Officers shared that a gray Chrysler was stolen out of Florissant.Investigators said that city officers tried to stop the car earlier Tuesday night, but the car took off. Later in the night, authorities shared that a police helicopter spotted the car and notified officers on the ground. That's when police used spike strips to try and stop the vehicle. LOUIS - Plans for a dual-branded hotel in downtown St. Louis are moving forward.According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the 'Land Clearance for Redevelopment Authority' approved ten years of tax abatement for 'Midas Hospitality's Project.' The 304-room building will include Kimpton hotels and restaurants and Staybridge suites.
