HUIXTLA, Mexico (AP) — Christmas Day meant the same as any other day for thousands of migrants walking through southern Mexico: more trudging under a hot sun. There were no presents, and Christmas Eve dinner was a sandwich, a bottle of water and a banana handed out by the Catholic church to some of the migrants in the town of Álvaro Obregón, in the southern state of Chiapas, which borders Guatemala.Migrants spent Christmas night sleeping on a scrap of cardboard or plastic stretched out under an awning or tent, or the bare ground. In the morning, it was waking as usual at 4 a.m., to get an early start and avoid the worst of the heat, walking to the next town, Huixtla, 20 miles (30 kilometers) away.Karla Ramírez, a migrant from Honduras who was travelling with other adults and four children, got to Álvaro Obregón too late Sunday to get any of the food being given out by the church. Belarus leader says Russian nuclear weapons shipments are completed, raising concern in the region

TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — The president of Belarus said Monday that Russia has completed its shipments of tactical nuclear weapons to his country, an initiative that raised strong concerns in neighboring Poland and elsewhere in the region.President Alexander Lukashenko said at a meeting of a Moscow-led economic bloc in St. Petersburg that the shipments were completed in October, but he did not give details of how many weapons were sent or where they have been deployed.Tactical nuclear weapons, which are intended for use on the battlefield, have a short range and a low yield compared with much more powerful nuclear warheads fitted to long-range missiles. Russia said it would maintain control over those it sends to Belarus.Lukashenko has said that hosting Russian nuclear weapons in his country is meant to deter aggression by Poland, a NATO member. LAMPASAS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) -- Tammy Sheard's cancer journey began about two years ago. She went to the doctor with serious stomach pain, and was told on Thanksgiving of that year that she had cancer. Still, she never stopped showing up - both literally and figuratively - for her students. "During that first school year that I battled cancer, the only days I missed were the days I went to the clinic to get chemo," she said. Aurora police searching for driver in fatal Christmas hit-and-run

Aurora police are searching for a driver following a fatal crash early Monday.Police responded around 1:20 a.m. Christmas morning to reports of a man injured near Yosemite Street and East Colfax Avenue, authorities said in a news release.Police found a man suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was transferred to the hospital, where he later died, police said. A six-year-old boy’s first time flying alone went awry when Spirit Airlines accidentally put him on the wrong flight.According to WINK-TV, Casper Ramos was supposed to fly from Philadelphia to Fort Myers, Florida last Thursday to stay with his grandmother. But when the flight arrived, Casper wasn’t there."I ran inside the plane to the flight attendant and I asked her, 'Where’s my grandson?" A three-alarm fire that burned for hours heavily damaged a two-story shopping center in Los Altos on Christmas morning, authorities said.The blaze at the building on El Camino Real, between North San Antonio Road and Sherwood Avenue, caused the roof to collapse, forcing firefighters to retreat from battling the fire inside.Crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings and contained it as of 11 a.m. No one was reported injured.Because of the collapsed roof, the county fire department has barred entry into the building. (KRON) – The Oakland Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred in the 400 block of 28th Street around midnight on Dec. 24.Officers were alerted by a ShotSpotter activation. Salvation Army holds its Christmas meal program Upon arrival, officers and medical personnel located a victim who sustained a gunshot wound(s). The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.  The victim's identity is being withheld pending notification to next of kin. This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Homicide Section at (510) 238-3821.
