By STAN CHOE (AP Business Writer)NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is ticking higher Thursday as investors consider both the upsides and downsides of the latest signals that the U.S. economy remains stronger than feared.The S&P 500 was 0.3% higher in afternoon trading after wobbling between small gains and losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 215 points, or 0.6%, at 34,068 as of 3 p.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite slipped 0.2%.Yields were jumping in the bond market after data showed the U.S. economy grew at a 2% annual rate in the first three months of the year, much stronger than the 1.3% rate earlier estimated. Murrieta woman hospitalized after bee attack

A woman was hospitalized after she was attacked by hundreds of bees at her home in Murrieta on Wednesday.Firefighters responded to the home in the 23000 block of Spring Branch Court around 2 p.m. where they found the woman covered by the swarming bees with stings on her arms and head, Murrieta Fire & Rescue officials said.Firefighters were also stung as they tried to help.Firefighters spray foam on a home in Murrieta, Calif. where a woman was attacked by bees. A video released by the fire department showed crews spraying foam on the hives.Last month, two people needed medical care after they were attacked by bees at a home in Encino in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley. Also in the Southland, a pit bull/mastiff mix needed veterinary care after getting stung hundreds of times by bees in the Lake Matthews area.

Federal government sues Los Angeles County for ADA compliance issues at vote centers

Los Angeles County is facing a lawsuit from the federal government after allegedly failing to accommodate those with vision and mobility disabilities at local vote centers, even after being informed of issues in 2016.The United States Department of Justice on Thursday announced that the county faces allegations of "fail[ing] to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990," a law commonly known as ADA.The deficiencies, which include steep ramps without handrails, a lack of van-accessible parking, abrupt level changes and other issues, were identified at 52 L.A. County vote centers during the November 2022 general election, officials said.County officials had been alerted to issues at vote centers after elections in June 2016, March 2020 and November 2020, when the U.S. Attorney's Office went to more than 250 polling places, of which "only a small percentage ... complied with the ADA," the release said. Ex-Ohio House speaker sentenced to 20 years for bribe scheme

As a precursor to the summer’s first intense warm-up, the National Weather Service issued a Bay Area heat advisory that will kick in Friday and could last the whole weekend.A Bay Area fire official kicked in another advisory, as well.“As it gets warm, the snakes will come out,” Darren Johnson, an Assistant Fire Chief for the Rodeo-Hercules Fire Department in Contra Costa County, said. “They’re gonna want to get to where it’s warm. Alameda County judge robbed at downtown Oakland ATM

OAKLAND — A retired Alameda County judge was robbed at gunpoint Wednesday after leaving an ATM in downtown Oakland, authorities said.The robbery happened about 5:05 p.m. Wednesday in the 1900 block of Franklin Street. Authorities said she had just used a bank ATM and was walking to her car when a man with a gun confronted her and took her bag containing her phone, wallet and cash.The robber fled in a waiting vehicle and was last seen going northbound on Franklin Street at 20th Street. Police believe the same suspects were involved in another armed robbery of a man who had just made a deposit at a bank in the 2000 block of Franklin Street at about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday. The man lost his phone, wallet and other personal items in the robbery.Recently, Oakland police have warned about an “uptick” in robberies at ATMs throughout the city. 'Hottest temps of the summer' on the way, according to National Weather Service

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- The hottest temperatures of the summer are about to arrive in the Bay Area, according to the National Weather Service. The warming trend will begin Thursday afternoon before really kicking into gear high Friday, the NWS said. Bay Area Heat AdvisoryA heat advisory goes into effect on Friday and will remain until Sunday. Temperatures will be especially high in the inland Bay Area and Central Coast. The heat will bring a moderate to high risk to those who are heat sensitive, the NWS said."We are going to be under an advisory starting at 11 a.m. Friday and going through Sunday evening," said KRON4 Meteorologist Kyla Grogan.
