Oakland’s homeless community enjoys a day of free music and food

OAKLAND – The sun was out. A cool breeze was blowing. It was the perfect day for some jazz and blues in the park. On Monday afternoon, the First Presbyterian Church of Oakland brought a free music festival to the Mosswood Park Amphitheater.Like most concerts, this one provided foot-tapping tunes and general merriment. Unlike most concerts, the “Compassion in Action” festival was organized specifically for unhoused people.“There are many festivals that cost a lot of money for folks to go to, but our unhoused neighbors cannot go,” said Rev. Matthew Prinz, the pastor at the church. “We need and want to address the hurt of our unhoused neighbors in many ways. This concert is just one way we hoped to create a healing and hopeful space.”There are more than 5,000 unhoused people in Oakland, according to the 2022 Point-In-Time Count. Extreme wealth gap is widening in Silicon Valley, new report finds

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- If Silicon Valley was a nation, it would be deemed as a politically unstable country with extreme wealth inequalities, according to a new report released Tuesday by professors with San Jose State University's Human Rights Institute. The 2023 Silicon Valley Pain Index report defined "Silicon Valley" as Santa Clara County and San Mateo County, as well as some Alameda County cities including Fremont, Newark, and Union City.The report was published to expose structured inequalities and achieve greater human rights in a region where titans of technology amass enormous profits. New data compiled by researchers outlines the region’s persistent inequalities, and "the astronomical concentration of wealth into the hands of an incredibly small number of households and companies," the report states. Montgomery County student uses ‘superpower’ to help others with diabetes

A diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes can be life-changing, and a Maryland teenager is using his experience with the disease to help other students adjust more easily to their diagnosis.Connor Pugh, 17, of Brookeville, has lived with diabetes for years. A rising senior at Sherwood High School in Sandy Spring and a Life Scout with the Scouts of America, Pugh came up with the plan to create diabetes kits as part of his Eagle Service project.The kits contain items ranging from insulin coolers to water bottles, ID bracelets and even sharps containers for needles.“It’s very hard to deal with needles when you’re out and about,” Pugh said.There are also calculators in each kit to help with insulin dosage calculations.Diabetics have to monitor their food intake and take that into account for insulin dosages, so calculations are just a part of their daily routine, which Hugh said can get “very complicated with decimals and whatnot, so a calculator is probably a necessi...

Stocks climbed after a cooler reading on inflation bolstered Wall Street’s expectations that the Federal Reserve will hold off on another interest rate hike this week. The S&P 500 rose 0.7% Tuesday, touching heights unseen since April 2022. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 145 points, while the Nasdaq composite rose 0.8%. Stocks have been on a roll amid hopes the economy can avoid a severe recession and inflation can ease enough for the Fed to ease off its hikes. Unlike early this year, Tuesday’s gains were widespread.
