SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom dropped $10 million on a new political action committee Thursday, pledging to boost Democrats in the reddest of red states ahead of the 2024 election and what could be a future run for president.Newsom launched the Campaign for Democracy using money left over from his 2022 campaign for governor, where he easily won reelection against a little-known Republican opponent. In a video announcing the committee, Newsom pledged to take on “authoritarian leaders” he says are “directly attacking our freedoms,” including Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Texas Gov. Wildfire sparks at Rocky Mountain Arsenal near stadium

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (KDVR) — As high winds hit the Front Range and sparked multiple wildfires around the region, another sparked at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge.The fire was reported near Quebec Street and Dick's Sporting Goods Park, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. South Adams Fire was responding to the scene. Debate over Park Hill golf course continues days before April 4 vote

DENVER (KDVR) — The 155 acres of land that were formerly the Park Hill golf course remains a big topic of debate. Ballot issue 2O will decide whether or not the land can be developed. Westside Investment Partners purchased the golf course after it closed in 2018, with plans to develop it. For the developers to build, measure 2O needs to pass to end the conservation easement. "We can’t ignore the reality that there’s no backup plan for this site, and Denver does not have the resources to buy or maintain this land," said Denver councilmember Kendra Black, who supports the measure. Wildfire evacuations lifted for town northeast of Colorado Springs

SIMLA, Colo. (KDVR) -- A wildfire burning northeast of Colorado Springs prompted mandatory evacuations of the entire town of Simla. Elbert County said the fire burning south of Simla threatened approximately 500-700 acres. The town evacuation was lifted about an hour later around 6:10 p.m. The fire was about 50% contained as of around 6:30 p.m., according to the Elbert County Office of Emergency Management.A shelter opened at the Elbert County Fairgrounds at 95 Ute Ave. in Kiowa.Elizabeth Fire said that Elbert County Road and Bridge cleared 25 feet of vegetation to help stop the fire from getting into Simla.Red flag warnings are in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday night as winds have been high with low humidity.
